I've met refugees. I've heard stories of trauma and triumph. But I never knew refugees collectively walk 1 billion miles to reach safety each year.
This solidarity campaign has never been more important. #StepWithRefugees - https://bit.ly/2LMsnPQ
So I am a fan of Star Trek. It’s not something I talk about in public a lot. But it’s true. And I have amassed a pretty impressive memorabilia collection over the last few years. Like a small museum. I won’t say I’m addicted to it but I do have a perhaps somewhat unhealthy relationship with acquiring items from the show.
But this holiday season, I’m going to GIVE IT UP FOR PROJECT ALS. That’s right, I’m not going to buy any Star Trek collectibles for the rest of the year. And all of the money I’m saving I’m going to donate to Project ALS research because ALS can affect people of any age, including children and teenagers.
There is currently no cure for ALS, and life expectancy after diagnosis is 2-5 years. Approximately 30,000 people are living with ALS in the US at any given time, along with hundreds of thousands worldwide, and someone new in the US is diagnosed with ALS every 90 minutes. ALS is closely related to Alzheimer’s & Parkinson’s — diseases that will touch us all. By 2025, 1 in 25 Americans will be diagnosed with a neurodegenerative disease, such as ALS, Huntington’s, Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s. It is estimated that the financial toll of the crisis — in healthcare costs alone — will reach $150 billion.
I nominate Olivia Munn, Sarah Silverman and Jim Carrey to join me in the #GiveItUpforProjectALS challenge and help us find a cure for this fatal disease.

1. Record a video declaring what you’ll give up for the holidays (a few weeks to a month!).
2. In the video/photo, enjoy that 'thing' for the LAST TIME and include the song “Give It Up,” the official #GiveItUpForProjectALS Challenge Theme Song by KC & The Sunshine Band. Start the song at the :58 second mark available via Instagram Music. And, if you want to give KC a shoutout in your videos, please do!
3. Challenge/Tag three friends to also give something up and donate to Project ALS.
I’m popping in to Andrew Gounardes for State Senate headquarters in Bay Ridge to see what he’s all about...
Here’s a story from my recent trip to Guatemala. The People I met there are dealing with problems that are hard to relate to in a lot of our everyday lives. But the human connections are something we all share. I hope this motivates you in someway to reach out to those in need or just have a slightly deeper understanding of what it means to be a “refugee”. Thanks for checking it out.
I'm really honored to be advocating for the millions of people fleeing violence and persecution around the world.
